Absolutely MAD Magazine - 50+ Years Right now

Regarding the low resolution: to think I almost "upgraded" from my Broderbund cd-roms. Glad I read the negatives here.

Considering that the main draw for me with MAD is the stunning art by Wally Wood in the first hundred or so issues, it makes no sense to have less resolution. I truly pity the latecomers who missed out on the cd-rom set and will not get the full impact of each issue.

However, I was introduced to my dad's stack of twenty year old MADs when I was a tyke in the 1970s - it included most of the issues from 37-125 (lost in a housefire, darnit) and were not simply funny but an introduction to recent history. I supppose I was the only eight year old who knew all the jokes about Richard Nixon and Nikita Khruschev.

The very best issues were 35-85 (1957-1962), be sure to check them out.

SO - if you have little guys and a PC, by all means get this for them and get them interested in their social studies classes from a smart-ass angle. It's always been a great help to me.

I bought this product because I wanted to have a 32-bit replacement for the label making component of the old 16-bit Print Shop Deluxe that I've been using (it came out in 1994 and was designed for Windows 3.1!!!). I saw this on the shelf at MicroCenter, and although I don't buy boxed software anymore (at least not without downloading a trial first), I couldn't resist the ten dollar price tag, so I bought it.

This review will actually be a quick list of notes I wrote up as I was testing out the program. Some are criticisms, and others are notes on using the program. These are somewhat organized in the order in which you'd come across these issues when installing and running the program, though the information on the registration nag is at the end so it is easier to read.

-- Run setup.exe to directly install the program without having to go through the trial screen interface (trial copies of other programs are available on the CD). You still will be nagged to install a payment service (to accept credit card payments for your business) and the NewsFlash program (used to send you company updates). You can easily say NO to both.

It would be nice to not have ANY kind of nags like this.

-- The program doesn't copy the clipart folder from the CD to the hard drive, even though it makes an empty Clipart directory in the program directory.

-- Some program settings are found in mylabels32.ini in the C:\Windows (or C:\WinNT) directory. This file is not deleted if you uninstall the program.

-- The program saves _FOUR FILES_ for every saved label (the files have the extensions .lbl, .bcf, .fsif, .msif). Even if you just have a label with one piece of data on it, and nothing in the databases, it still saves it as four files. For a simple label with just a name and address on it (no database entries), the combined size of the four files is 35 Kb. Other label making programs save only one file, with a size between 1 and 6 Kb.

This is the primarily deal-breaker for me. This is the reason why I'm no longer keeping the program. If I make 10 labels, I will have 40 FILES(!) to deal with. That's just not right.

Unfortunately, MicroCenter won't take the item back because they don't take back opened software (as is the usual policy for most stores). I can't take advantage of the publisher's 30-Day Money Back Guarantee because I didn't get a chance to install the software until a bit more than 30 days after I bought it. Granted, ten dollars isn't a big loss, but it's still a loss.

-- To print an entire sheet of labels containing the same data on each label (just a single name and address - hard-coded to the design, not from a database), you must set the number of copies on the Print dialog box to the number of labels on the sheet (30 for the Avery 5160/8160/8660/6460 layout). This is not very intuitive, as the Copies field normally selects the number of PAGES to be printed (as it is standard in all Print dialogs for ALL Windows programs).

This is the other deal-breaker, especially since the number of "copies" resets to 1 every time you run the program (as that is what Windows normally does in the Print dialog window of ANY program). So every time I open and print one of my labels (as I tend to create labels with singular data, not from databases), I have to remember to change the number of "copies" to 30. The program won't even save that information to any of the four files that it creates for each label.

-- If there are multiple records in your database, and you just want to print one, select the record you want to print by entering the same record number in both From and To fields in the Print Range.

-- How to remove the registration nag without registering (which is free but shouldn't be necessary): Amazon wouldn't let me include the text in my review that you'd need to copy and paste into Notepad, so you'll have to go to this product's forum (near the bottom of the product's main page) and read the instructions that I posted there. Look for the topic entitled "ProVenture Label Maker Registration Nag" and you'll get all the information you need. Extensis SUITCASE X1 (Mac)

I've been a Macintosh consultant to graphic artists for over 15 years. Suitcase was always THE solution for font management. However, Extensis was never able to get X1 working under Mac OS X. I suggest you avoid this version at all costs. After several rounds with Extensis tech support, whose advice consisted mostly of ineffective and unhelpful (but lengthy) procedures, I gave up and switched to FontAgent Pro. I haven't had a SINGLE crash in the year since I made that move. Compare that with the almost daily crashes of Suitcase X1 under Mac OS 10.4.x. Buyer beware.

I purchased this software for my family and it has turned out to be one of the best purchases I have ever made. The realism in the effects is unreal, it's as if you are actually painting on paper. You mix colors like you would with a regular paint pallete, and as you paint your color fades when your paint is running out just like in real life. This program retails for less than $100. Don't expect it to be used by Steven Spielberg. I bought it several years ago in an Office Max because I was in a hurry to put together a crude edit of a home movie. However, from the day I started using it up until now, I continue to be impressed with its capabilities, ease of use, and reliability. I keep discovering new features, and am yet to outgrow it after creating about half a dozen pretty ambitious home movies.

I am retired now, but when employed as a software engineer, my specialty was user interface. I am very critical of poor interfaces. Video Explosion got it right. The ability to introduce and edit transitions and special effects on the timeline is excellent. Menus are clear, and provide good clues to drilling down to extra features. The help facility is first rate. And, most importantly, the program seems to be bug free.

I have not used any higher end video software, so my perspective is limited. I am not a pro, but I work very hard to make my home movies as professional looking as possible. For the price paid, this package continues to impress me, and certainly to fill my needs. Where To Buy Art Explosion 600,000 Images

I inherited this set when I was hired on as a graphic designer at my shop. It's huge, yes, but the old adage about quantity over quality rings true. And this monster is cumbersome to use. The print manual is more hefty than a large-print annotated Bible, and is all but useless to find images-- you first have to find your object in the index, and then flip to the page to squint at tiny, grainy little thumbnails in black and white, then go to the disc itself, hunt it down again, and then pray that once it's up on the screen it's not completely hideous and unworkable.

The vector images are roughly 75% utter junk. Most of it looks outdated, there are no bézier curves to be had at all, and the quality of the art itself? I'd have never made it out of high school art class (let alone college) if it had been my work. Sloppy, ugly, amateurish. (A notable WTF: there's a single image of a cheery man inside a giant condom. I can't think of any reasonable use for it that doesn't induce crippling laughter.)

The raster and photograph sections suffer from about the same ratio of crap-to-notcrap. I leave the rasters alone by and large because I work mostly in vector, but on the few occasions I've had use of them, the rasters are low-resolution, look poorly scanned, and wholly unsuitable to print. Website use, maybe, but I don't spend a lot of time there. The photographs are a mess-- not categorized, it's impossible to find anything specific; Need an elephant photo? Hope you like looking through 300 photos of African wildlife. I'd say about half of the photos are poorly taken, as if someone raided their co-workers' families' vacation photo albums.

To be absolutely fair, I do rely on this collection when I want something simple or iconic. However I do end up changing or modifying almost everything about it in the end to suit my needs. In order to give a piece of software any review, one must first be able to load it onto a computer. Mine gets to a certain point and then asks to be directed to a "smart web printing" file that is not on the insallation disk. Alternatively, the error message directs the user to place in the CD drive a disk labeled "Smart Web Printing" from somewhere. I found one in one of the subfiles but I receive another error message states that the selected file is not valid. I went to the control board add/remove programs on which the program had loaded over 250,000K of information. I unstalled the program and got rid of at with one exception: "a message stating that it was "loading Smart web printing" popped up randomly. Pushing the "cancel" button got rid of it for a second or two and then it was back. I searched the Net and discovered that the Smart Web Printing is a feature of Hewlett Packard printing software. I downloaded a new smart web printing file from the HP web site and that fixed the problem. It is apparent to me that Business Card Factory altered the HP files. I waited on the que on the Nova Development tech support line for over 90 minutes and then I was cut off. This program is too inexpensive to fight over returns. Maybe I'm spoiled at work with AutoCad and Visio 2007, but I think this piece of software really needs work. I bought it to use as a item to do light work for home projects. The library looks as though an 8 year put it together.

I realize that for what it costs it wasn't going to be much, but this program really lacks. If this is what you get for the price I would look around for something else. I bit the bullet, put this on the shelf, and swung for Visio for my home projects. Hopefully, I can keep Visio going for some years to come.

I think that Write Brothers StoryView is a wonderful product! As you work on your dramatic writing process for either a script, play, or novel. Storyview 2.0 will allow you to view each scene in relation to the others. I developed my story on a dramatic writing software and then exported it over to StoryView. StoryView brought up the scenes beautifully and I was able to objectively view each screen in contrast to the other scenes - and also have a larger view of the story as a whole! Without this product most people would have to use index cards in order to perform this process. But with StoryView, the process is much easier. Plus, you are able to import dramatic writing ideas from other software and be able to arrange and critique the ideas in the StoryView software and then export the ideas to a script formatting software. I use all three in conjunction with each other. But the best benefit of these features is that you are able to view, piece together, and develop a story - all in one process with StoryView - and then the final step would be the technicality of formatting the story into a script! Also, I want to mention that you can also convert the scenes with StoryView into a Word document and be able to show your story to others who do not own the StoryView software. Have not purchased an updated version for my vista system; now probably won't after reading all the negative reviews. To me, that explains ALL of the problems I've read about regarding rushing too soon to market & poor or non-existent customer service/tech help, as well as all of the problems with the software. Not in this case, but have been similarly burned with assuming a company I've done business with for years is still the same company with the same integrity. Not so any more - with practically everything, especially food. These companies are quite adept at hiding these things so you have to take the extra time to do some homework. My 9 year old son has become frustrated at not being able to better control design changes/additions, or view more realistic images. Occasional problems due to apparent bugs also... The "Help" information is useless. The manual is only 3 pages long and the size of a CD case and spends more space talking about legal uses of the art than anything of help or value. There is no book, so if the "Easy keyword Viewer" fails to work the clip art discs are worthless. I wish I could rate this ZERO Stars, but one star is the minimum rating.
